UPDATE: Thank You Zazzle for awarding me with an Honorable Mention in the recipe binder contest.

Zazzle has teamed up with Avery Binders to offer a recipe design contest. I was able to get my entry completed and entered in the nick of time. Deadline to enter was November 2nd at 11:59 PT.

I love making patterns in photoshop and I thought it would be fun to make a pattern out of fruits and vegetables. I created simple food shapes in illustrator (orange, banana, peas, broccoli, tomato, and bread) and then imported them into Photoshop and created a pattern with them.

The best gifts are from the heart

Sometimes the best gifts are from the heart. Recently my daughter gave me one of those types of gifts. First I have to tell a little back story...

A few weeks ago, my mom emailed me at work to tell me that she and my dad are going to Hawaii. She's afraid of flying over the water and is very nervous about going. (Does it really matter if you are over water or land? You're likely to die either way, right?) I didn't tell my mom that, but instead, I wrote back to tell her that if she chickens out I'd go in her place!

Later that day, I'm picking up my 2 kids at daycare and my husband calls me on my cell to tell me that my mom had called at home. She wanted to know if we wanted to go to Hawaii with them. Immediately I yell "YES!!" into the phone. Then my husband says, "Tickets are $700 a piece." Yikes, $2,800 for the 4 of us to go! Dang, not going to happen. After I get off the phone I say out loud to my kids, "Mommy is sad that we won't get to go to Hawaii"

After a moment, my 4 yr old daughter says she is going to make a surprise for me when we get home. I managed to get her to tell me what the surprise was going to be when we got home, but when we got home we all got sidetracked. Until a few days ago...

That day, I was working late trying to finish up a big project. My kids were still up when I got home though and all excited to show me something in the living room. I was instructed to close my eyes as they dragged me upstairs.

When I opened my eyes, the living room was transformed and my daughter announced "We're in Hawaii!" My sweet adorable daughter created Hawaii for me because I was sad about not going for real!

The first thing I saw was her bedspread spread out on the floor. "That's the ocean" my daughter tells me. Next was another blanket draped over the arm of the couch. "That's the waterfall." A stack of baskets with another blanket draped over it was a coconut tree and the 2 balled up belts on top were the coconuts. The stack of cushions with a red fleece blanket on top was the volcano.

Her eyes shining with excitement, she then brought me over to the dining room area (which isn't actually used for dining as we have no dining room table). She informed me that we needed to go on the plane to fly to Hawaii. She had her Ikea table set up with cushions on it (our seats), her sit 'n spin was the "wheel" of the plane. She also had her magnadoodle propped up against a chair to display the picture of a plane that she drew on it.

My daughter and I sit on the table/seats while my son got on the sit n spin/wheel and "flew" us to Hawaii. I let them stay up way past their bedtime so we could enjoy our "vacation" take lots of pictures.

When I finally got them off to bed, I told my daughter that was the best gift ever!

Giving Back - A silent auction to help out a little girl in need

A very talented photographer friend of mine has started a silent auction to help out a little girl in need. Zoe was diagnosed with trisomy18 and she was not expected to live past the first few months of life. She has made it past 6 months and is still fighting to live.

I have rediscovered my love of photoshop brushes, patterns and textures. I created this birth announcment with my new stripes pattern and 2 background textures.

To celebrate halloween I used my wacom tablet and photoshop to draw a witch, which I put on my new scratchy background and made into a card. Hope you have a boo-tiful halloween!

RME - Revolution Money Exchange - Free $25 for signing up (til May 15th)

I just found out about this payment service a couple weeks ago. It's like paypal, but they don't charge fees for exchanging money (yet). In order to get people to sign up and to spread the word about their service, they are offering $25 for anyone who signs up. Plus you get $10 bonuses for anyone you get to sign up AND verify their account. To verify your account, you add your bank info so you can transfer money to and from your bank account.

I was skeptical of this service at first because you have to supply your social security number when you sign up. However, the accounts are issued by First Bank & Trust, Brookings, SD and FDIC insured and apparently banks are required to ask you for a social security number.

Another caveat is that this service is available in the USA only. So if you aren't from the US, don't even bother trying to sign up at this point.

One last caveat, I have had not had any problems with this service but I know other people who have. It is a new service so I'm sure it will take time to get everything all worked out.

Now that said, if you are interested in signing up, you must sign up by May 15th in order to get the $25 bonus.

When you sign up, make sure you select "Accept Payment" to get the $25. After you sign up, you can refer a friend and get $10 in bonuses every time they sign up AND verify their account. Again, you will have to selece "accept payment" in order for you to get the referal bonus.

http://www.darntoothysam.com - specializes in digital camera parts and repair. Don't throw away your camera. If it's not working properly, you may not have to replace it. Check them out to see they can repair it or sell a replacement part. They can repair laptops too!

Time for new business cards

I decided to drop the name Precise Portrayals for my business and use Art Lady Manor instead. That means I also need new business cards. I had put Precise Portrayals on hold for a few years while I had my 2 children. I've only had orders thru word of mouth over the past few years. I discovered Etsy beginning of September and have been working like mad to get my shop presentable in time for the holiday season this year. I am really excited about this new venture.

Anyhow, here is the 2nd draft of my new business card. Please comment and let me know what you think!

Art Lady Manor is an anagram of my real name, which I thought was fitting for my online businesses at www.zazzle.com/artladymanor*, www.cafepress.com/artladymanor and http://www.artladymanor.etsy.com/

I also have my own website at http://www.artladymanor.com/ where I sell custom portrait drawings.

About 5 years ago I came upon an automated technique for converting photos into black & white drawings. The technique was very simple, and looked very computer generated. However, I loved the idea of creating art from photographs so I came up with my own technique that utilizes my skills as an artist and photoshop guru.
My friends and family raved about my sketches and thought I had drawn them the traditional way. A friend even bet her husband that they were hand-drawn with pencil and paper. She lost. The friend's husband only suspected that they were created digitally only because he thought they were too precise. I called my creations Precise Portrayals.
